The last version the 124g was essentially the same as the 124 except that it had gold plated contacts in the meter hence the g suffix. The new and the old. Pictured at the top is the yashica mat 124g shot with a sony a7r iii. All the controls are logical easily accessible and placed pretty much in the same places where one would look for them on almost any tlr. The 80mm is phenomenal as a portrait lens but still has enough breadth in frame to rock some street photography or even landscapes.

I walk the streets at night to shoot stranger portraits with some cinestill 800t and the yashica mat 124g. Such a fun time capturing some of the local faces. The yashicamat 124g is medium format at its most effective with an 80mm f 3 5 lens fixed to the body and a 6x6 setup. It s a beautiful camera even without knowing what it can do photographically.

For me however the 124 was not the first medium format camera because several years ago i bought zenza bronica etrs 6 4 5 cm slr and i also happen to own sinar f1 9 12 cm. As a 6 6 format twin lens reflex camera the yashica mat 124 tlr is considered a great entry level camera for people who are moving up from 35mm to medium format film.
