Paint Osb Flooring

A good exterior paint can actually add to your osb s water resistance as well as add a splash of color to your project.

Osb subfloor is mostly serving as a base under the finish floor hardwood engineered wood vinyl tile etc and even below the underlayment in some cases. Oriented strand board consists of several layers of wood particles that are bound by an adhesive and compressed tightly together into a 4 by 8 foot panel.
Plenty of osb outbuildings out there still surviving with nothing but a coat of latex protecting them. Using a painters pad with a long handle extension we applied three very thick coats. Osb s open strands readily absorb paint requiring two coats at a minimum but more likely three coats. You might want to call a osb manufacturer for their recommendation but it seems i recall the osb manufactures don t recommend painting osb i think it s just a legal disclaimer thing.
If you intend to paint your final project at all make sure it is added before any waterproofing so the sealer can also protect your top coat. Particularly old osb that is beginning to fall apart cannot be painted. I mean very thick coats like puddles almost. Zinsser are good paints i don t think you will have massive problems from osb it contains a lot of phenolic resin glue which tends to seal it quite well compared to raw wood.
